The title of this work, ctrl + alt + delete, is first of all a shortcut within the language of software, which in many applications keys the deletion of an entire word by itself—an act that may, in the worst case, lead to a distortion in a text’s message. Applying this procedure on a metaphorical level brings one closer to the intentions of this audio-visual piece. It’s about the erasure of references and the questioning to what extent something can contribute to awareness, even when perceived only in the form of fragments whose semantic associations remain uncertain. In dealing with this essential issue, Gary Berger examines the inter-media dialogue between sound and image in order to formulate an aesthetic response.
